Webinar: A Guide to Tasmanian Timber Specification
Tasmanian Timber Specification
Timber specification is the process of identifying and naming a timber species, along with its relevant grade and technical characteristics. Unlike manufactured materials, timber originates from a living tree, and all wood products retain unique characteristics, reflecting the species, source, and individual tree it came from. This means specifying timber demands a deeper level of understanding than most materials.
Michael “Mick” Lee covers the key timber species available in Tasmania, including Tasmanian Oak, Blackwood, Myrtle, Celery Top Pine, Sassafras, Radiata Pine, Huon Pine, and Plantation Hardwood – outlining the technical properties and availability of each. Covering the difference between Australian Standard grades and Tasmania’s own Prime and Classic grades, emphasising that grade is about aesthetic consistency, not product quality.
Touching on fire certificates, sustainability certifications (PEFC and FSC), and the carbon storages benefits of using timber in construction. The technical information needed to specify timber is available on the Tasmanian Timber website, with an expert helpline available to provide the technical support on choosing the right timber for the right application.
