Tasmanian Oak, Colours, Grades, and Finishes

The third session of the Tasmanian Timber webinar series brought together Technical Manager Michael Lee and Professor Greg Nolan – registered architect, Professor at the University of Tasmania’s School of Architecture and Design, and is now “previous” Director of the Centre for Sustainable Architecture with Wood – for an in-depth look at Australia’s most-loved timber species.

Tasmanian Oak is one of the most versatile hardwoods available, suited to an extraordinary range of applications including panelling, flooring, veneers, joinery, furniture and external structures. It works exceptionally well across all forms of construction and produces an excellent finish.

Mick and Greg guided viewers through Tasmanian Oak’s natural colour palette – ranging from pale straw and cream through to pink and reddish brown, and its outstanding staining qualities, which allow it to be readily matched with other timbers, finishes, and furnishings. The session explored how Tasmanian Oak’s inherent colour variation can be embraced and used to the designer’s advantage. Viewers were familiarised to Tasmania’s Prime and Classic grading system – both meet full performance criteria under AS2796. Prime, offering a clean, minimal-feature aesthetic, and Classic is a high-feature grade, celebrating the timber’s natural characteristics.

The session also explored the many ways surface and colour can be manipulated, from veneer layouts and board profiles through to staining, heat treatment, and charring. Recent projects from the University of Tasmania demonstrated these possibilities across floors, walls, ceilings, and structural elements, illustrating how Tasmanian Oak performs beautifully in contemporary interiors.

Whether you are an architect, builder, designer, or furniture maker, this session offers valuable information from two experienced voices of the timber industry.
