Seasoned Timber Products
Seasoned timber products are sawn and dried boards that are graded for appearance or structural applications and are ready to use as a feedstock for further processing.
Generally, Tasmania’s hardwood species are quartersawn for appearance products or backsawn for structural products. In both cases, the recovered boards are generally seasoned, air and kiln-dried, into a stable rough sawn product with a consistent moisture content. Seasoned timber tends to be dimensional stable, and have reduced weight, increased strength and stiffness, better gluing, and improved workability when compared to unseasoned material.
Appearance products are graded to the relevant standard, suitable for dressing, profiling or assembling into furniture, joinery or similar items. Structural products are graded for structural application, suitable for framing or assembly into larger structural components such as glulam beams or nail-plated trusses and elements.
Rough Sawn Board
Rough sawn boards are dry and stable timber that retain the surface made from the original saw. These are produced in a range of species, grades, and nominal sizes and thicknesses by many Tasmanian producers. Joiners, furniture makers and timber laminators will often acquire rough sawn products of the desired size and grade to dress and mould to custom sizes and profiles for their specific products or applications.
Dressed Board
Dressed boards are dry and stable timber that has been milled to have smooth, even faces and precise dimensions. These are produced in a range of species, grades, and nominal sizes and thicknesses by many Tasmanian producers and are sold for use in joinery, door frames, furniture and other manufactured products.
