Craft, Character and Connection: The Beauty of Tasmanian Timber in Three Distinct Homes
Tasmanian timber takes centre stage in a trio of unique homes designed and crafted by SpaceCraft Joinery, a boutique South Australian business known for its highly personalised, design-led joinery and commitment to local materials. SpaceCraft Joinery specialises in custom-designed kitchens and furniture that are beautiful, durable, and made to last. Their work is grounded in the belief that good design is personal, sustainable, and connected to place, and their preference for Tasmanian timber reflects this ethos.
Each of these homes, designed for clients Dot + Nick, Blythe + Adam, and Cécile + Tom, features carefully considered uses of Tasmanian timbers, specifically Tasmanian Oak and Blackwood, chosen for their warmth, texture, and sustainability.
Cécile + Tom: Minimal, Textural, Nordic-Inspired
Originally intended as an investment property, Cécile and Tom’s home evolved into a minimalist but richly layered space inspired by Nordic design. Tasmanian Blackwood was used extensively: crown-cut veneer for joinery fronts, solid timber handles, and refined dividing panels that bring subtle detail.
“Their brief was minimal, but with a timber aesthetic and strong details,” says Sarah Katsaros, Senior Designer at SpaceCraft Joinery. “It’s a very considered home. The timber adds so much texture without overwhelming the minimal palette.”
Dot + Nick: Bright, Playful and Scandinavian
For Dot and Nick, it was all about creating a light-filled, cheerful space with a Scandinavian soul. Tasmanian Oak veneer joinery and solid Tas Oak floating shelves were used to achieve a soft, inviting balance.
“They’ve got such bright personalities, and the home reflects that. It’s light, cheerful, and the timber helps soften and ground the space.”
Blythe + Adam: Mid-Century Earthiness
With its rammed-earth walls and rich tones, Blythe and Adam’s home channels a mid-century aesthetic with industrial undertones. Darker benchtops and deep Blackwood joinery deliver a warm, earthy finish.
“All the fronts are veneer with intricate solid edging. The custom wave handles in solid Blackwood really elevate it. Blackwood’s tonal richness is perfect for this style of home.”
Why Tasmanian Timber?
For SpaceCraft, Tasmanian timber offers a balance of practicality, beauty, and sustainability.
We use Tasmanian Oak constantly. It’s reliable, workable, takes stain beautifully, and the grain is always gorgeous. We even did an emerald green wash on it recently, and it still let the grain shine through, says Sarah.
Sarah says their clients also respond to the authenticity of local materials.
“They love that it’s Australian. It feels grounded, familiar, and there’s a sense of connection to place. We often guide them through the timber story, its grain, texture, and even how it changes over time. With manmade materials, you just don’t get that character. Timber ages, deepens, tells a story. You can sand it back, refinish it, and it’s still beautiful.”
Blackwood is a particular favourite for mid-century and heritage styles. “It has this richness that complements warmer tones and offers a timeless quality. People are drawn to darker timbers again, and Blackwood delivers.”
Sustainability as Standard
As a business committed to local, ethical design, SpaceCraft Joinery proudly supports Australian timber producers.
We’re a small business, and supporting other local industries is part of who we are. We stand by using Tasmanian timber; it reflects our values, and it resonates with our clients.
Their approach champions sustainable, long-lasting design—both aesthetically and environmentally.
“Using timber is never just about appearance. It’s about creating something healthy, repairable, and rooted in place. That’s what we believe in.”
