Heightened demand for products from Tasmanian-managed forests

There’s been an increased demand for products sourced from Tasmanian-managed forests both through and post the pandemic, says Britton Timber’s Shawn Britton.

“This is a trend that we see continuing as people choose natural, locally produced materials over imported and plastic laminate products,” he said.

The demand for timber products made with locally produced materials marries up with new data released by Roy Morgan, which shows that 96 per cent of Australians are more likely to buy products made in Australia in the 12 months to March 2022.

Britton Timber’s Touchwood is one such product that is proving popular with customers, not only due to its availability but its price point and beautiful finish too. Nine-millimetre moisture-resistant MDF backing coupled with a Blackwood or Tasmanian Oak veneer face gives the appearance of solid timber VJ panelling. It’s a product that is easy to work with and is largely indistinguishable from any solid timber piece.

Lloyd Osborne, owner of Hobart carpentry business Cottage Revival, has been using Britton Timber’s Touchwood product on one of his latest builds.

“The supply has been excellent,” he said. “Being a local product they’re readily available and there’s a very fast turnaround for ordering – a matter of a week for delivery.”

Shawn Britton said a network of sustainable, local resources, combined with a substantial stock holding of timber and veneer products, meant peace of mind for his customers.

“We’re gearing up to cater for that (heightened demand for timber) so we can offer a seamless supply chain, so we’ve got our product situated in locations around the country,” he said.

“It can move from manufacturing in Tasmania to our warehouses to commercial or domestic applications within days as opposed to weeks or months for imported products seamlessly.

“Our strength lies in our diversity and this product (Touchwood) adds to the diversity of Britton Timbers range, that’s for sure.

“It provides the building, construction industries and homeowners comfort that they can buy a beautiful product using Tasmanian timbers and it can adorn any application they require.”

Britton Timber’s Touchwood is a highly versatile product, ideal for commercial and domestic fit-outs such as wall panelling, ceiling lining, office fit outs, feature walls, furniture components, shop fittings and even lining out a shed.

The Tasmanian manufactured product can be easily used and installed by construction companies, builders, tradespeople, and home renovators. The product will take any kind of finish, including waxes, oils or polyurethane in gloss, satin, or matt finishes.
